The view into the ‘Garden of Ediacara’ evokes an early and peaceful phase in Earth’s history – a world in which the predator-prey dynamic had not yet taken hold.

The work depicts the fertilisation process involving several strange, alien-like creatures and the subsequent birth of a new generation of aliens in the form of eggs.

However, the tiled laboratory setting framing the scene is unsettling. On closer inspection, human intervention becomes apparent: the alien life form is clearly not in an autonomous natural environment, but in a controlled, man-made setting. The bodies hanging from hooks are reminiscent of a slaughterhouse. A seemingly peaceful primal scene is transformed into an image of human control and violence.
